Porridge-Katuwe, or Rocks-Tents: a unique natural attraction in the USA




National monument Kasha-Katuwe one of the unique natural attractions of the United States. This mountain range was formed from the deposition of volcanic rocks and ash, so the rocks have acquired an original conical shape. For this they received the playful name "Rock-Tents".



The rocks were formed 6-7 million years ago in the eruption of the volcano Games. The stream of lava flowed down the slopes, and in later centuries by the ravages of wind and water "washed" canyons and gorges in the rock. - The rocks consist of soft pumice and tuff, and on top they are covered with translucent so-called "volcanic glass". The height of the Rocks-Tents different and varies from a few to 30 meters.



Scientists believe that the area where the rocks Kasha-Katuwe, has been inhabited by humans for over seven thousand years ago. In the 15th century there lived the ancestors of the modern Pueblo Indians, who left numerous rock paintings. The first modern settlers came to this area in the late 1700-ies. Title Porridge-Katuwe rocks gave the Indians, in the local dialect it means "white cliffs". Though actually, the rock looks white, but rather gray interspersed with beige and pink. published



The monument is located in the office of the Governor Cochiti community of the Pueblo Indians. It is not allowed to build fires, walk dogs and enjoy visiting the reserve is possible only in the daytime.
