New hybrid solar cells generate 5 times more energy
Scientists have developed a new hybrid solar cell that uses sunlight and heat to create more energy than ever before by pairing the solar cell with polymer films.
As a result, a solar battery hybrid can produce up to five times more electrical voltage than existing technologies. While this type of solar cell is much more expensive than others, the researchers behind the technology hope consumers will opt for more solar power production despite the high cost.
Each new generation of solar panels has greater efficiency in converting solar energy into electricity than the previous generation. Developers are trying to improve the efficiency of the cell, sometimes by simply adding more surface area, or coming up with ways to get more sunlight by constantly monitoring the movement of the sun.
However, even the most recent iterations still do not use most of the solar radiation spectrum, although solar cells are exposed to it sufficiently. Hybridizing the material that makes up solar cells is one way to improve efficiency, so researchers are experimenting with different substances to achieve a better result. In this study, Eunkyoung Kim and colleagues used a pure, conductive polymer known as PEDOT, which performed much better than expected.
The PEDOT film, which is heated by light, is coated with a thin-film solar cell based on light-sensitive dyes and then placed on top of a pyroelectric thin film and a thermoelectric device, both of which can convert heat into electricity.
The result is a device that collects 20 percent more solar energy than a single solar cell. This is made possible by a hybrid cell that can generate electricity from the resulting heat, just as it can from light.
The idea of creating a hybrid solar cell is not new, but this invention demonstrates efficiency five times higher than other comparable hybrid systems. published
P.S. And remember, just changing our consumption – together we change the world!
