Macquarie – tiny green island ruled by penguins

Speaking of penguins, we usually imagine them in a desolate white expanse of Antarctica. But these sea birds live in many different ecosystems throughout the southern hemisphere. A large population of penguins lives on the Australian island of Macquarie.

This narrow piece of land with a length of 32 kilometers lies a thousand kilometres South of Australia and is known for the diversity of the ecosystem. On Macquarie is home to many species of penguins as well as seals and albatrosses.

At the beginning of the 20th century the local population of penguins were on the verge of extinction, when hunters killed them for their valuable fat. But in the 1960-ies was taken to preserve animals. In 1978 the island was declared a reserve, and in 1997, Macquarie ranked as the world heritage list of UNESCO, which helped to protect its unique ecosystem and vulnerable inhabitants.published
