Little Green Island Macquarie

Talking about penguins, we tend to represent them in the desert white expanses of Antarctica. But these seabirds are found in many different ecosystems throughout the southern hemisphere. Most penguin population is living on the Australian Macquarie island green.





This narrow piece of land 32 kilometers long, is one and a half thousand kilometers to the south of Australia and is known for the diversity of the ecosystem. On Macquarie home to many species of penguins as well as seals and albatrosses.

In the early 20th century, the local population of penguins are endangered, when hunters exterminated them for their valuable fat. But in the 1960s, measures were taken to preserve the animals. In 1978, the island recognized the reserve, and in 1997 ranked Macquarie to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has helped to protect the unique ecosystem and its inhabitants vulnerable.
