Salt from China infected with microplastics

Tiny plastic particles, known among environmental scientists as microplastics, are increasingly detected in water reservoirs worldwide. They accumulate in organisms of marine and river animals, including fish and shellfish that people consume that can cause a negative impact on their health. And recently, scientists from the American chemical society after testing samples of commercial products from China, reported that in samples of sea salt have also been discovered microplastics.

Micro-plastic particles have dimensions of less than 5 millimeters in diameter. The sources of pollution microplastics can be very different – waste industrial production, personal care products and plastic waste that do not decompose in the environment. According to the results of many laboratory tests, the plastic fragments of nano-size can penetrate into human cells and cause tissue damage in the human body.

A recent study conducted by Huahong Shi and his colleagues-chemists, have demonstrated that microplastics can be contained in sea salt. As you know, this seasoning is made by evaporating sea water and is currently used by many people as alternatives to regular table salt, which comes from underground deposits.

The researchers tested 15 brands of salt from the sea, salt from salt lakes and mineral springs, purchased in Chinese supermarkets. In sea salt contains high concentrations of micro-plastic – from 550 to 681 particles per kilogram. Salt from mineral sources contained the lowest concentration of micro-plastic – from 7 to 204 particles per kilogram. Scientists even suggest that these contaminants were in the salt in the treatment process.

Thus, if adults would consume sea salt at the recommended doses, they can potentially proglatyvat 1000 plastic microparticles per year. By the way, according to the results of another study, many Europeans consume about 11000 of these particles each year by eating "dirty" shellfish caught in contaminated or doubtful clean water. published
