United Airlines has launched regular flights on bio-fuel
After several years of demonstration and test flights proved the viability of the fuel, this is the first American airline, which on an industrial scale to use biofuels in passenger jets, running regular flights.
March 11, United flight 708 with bio-fuel took off from international airport Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO). The flight took place after the airline signed a contract with refinery AltaAir Paramount for the supply of 15 million gallons (56.7 million liters) of biofuels to the airport in Los Angeles for three years with the option to purchase more.
AltaAir converts environmentally friendly raw materials, including agricultural waste and non-food natural oils, plus fuel for jet engines.
Aircraft United Airlines will operate on the mixture of biofuels and regular fuel for jet engines of petroleum origin with a proportion of 30/70. The airline says the mixture of biofuels will provide flights from LAX to SFO for two weeks while at the airport would proceed with the integration of fuel for regular flights daily. The idea was to provide fuel 125 00 flights between Los Angeles and San Francisco within three years of the contract, which is about 10 flights per day.
The cost of biofuel is competitive with traditional jet fuel, although it has the advantage of 50-percent reduction of CO2 emissions on life cycle basis compared to traditional jet fuel.
And while biofuels make up only two percent of all fuel used by the airline in Los Angeles, this may indicate the beginning of widespread acceptance of fuel from renewable sources in the industry.
Airlines have conducted research and experimented with alternative fuels for some time. The project led by the University of British Columbia is exploring the conversion of wood waste into fuel for aircraft, while other airlines, including Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, Continental, and KLM have already conducted test flights using biofuels. published
