Exxon wants to use to capture CO2 fuel cells

Oil giant ExxonMobil announced that it, together with a small company FuelCell Energy will develop a new technology to capture CO2 in thermal power plants. In particular, it uses the carbonate fuel cell that significantly reduces costs and opens the technology path to global use.

"Capture of CO2 using carbonate fuel cells can become a revolution in the field of thermal energy, says FuelCell CEO Chip Button. – This technology will allow to reduce by 70% the greenhouse emissions of power plants".

Two years laboratory tests have demonstrated that this technique allows to capture CO2 more efficiently than any existing methods. "Our scientists saw the great potential of this technology when used on gas power plants. It not only increases the efficiency of capture of carbon, and gives the opportunity to produce additional electricity," — said Vijay Swarup, Vice President of ExxonMobil research and developments.

Strategy Exxon to reduce greenhouse emissions previously not made much of an impression on the public, especially in comparison with, for example, Total investment in the new photovoltaic technology or with the construction of a Shell Corporation of a plant for recycling carbon in Alberta.

However, this development can finally create Exxon's reputation fighter against global warming. However, this will require a lot of time. Agreement with FuelCell provides at the first stage of a two-year study, which should increase the capture and concentration of CO2.

The second phase will take another two years: partners will conduct comprehensive tests in a pilot project. And only after that we can start the global application technology. published
