The Berlin company Younicos, specializing in renewable energy, is building the world's first grid-based renewable energy to the island Graciosa Azores (Portugal).
With regard to the scope of the project, it is already installed solar power (1 MW), which provides power on a small island, while the wind farm (4, 5 MW) is installed. They will be supported by a fully automated (3.2 MW) software that will balance short-term power fluctuations.
In its draft Younicos wants to prove that on the basis of renewable energy it is possible to create a stable power grid, which can be used at night or in calm weather. One-third of the existing fossil fuel island will remain as a backup power supply and is used for long periods of inclement weather.
"Our technology allows you to use as much renewable energy as it is economically optimal. This grid is not only dramatically reduce CO2 emissions, but also more affordable than using a diesel fuel whose importation is for the islands and areas particularly expensive ", - said CEO Stephen L. Prince Younicos
.
Danish financial investor Recharge A / S was quite amazed, to buy 50, 1% of the shares worth EUR 24 million in Younicos and exploring similar opportunities in neighboring islands.
