Indian airport began supplying electricity to the grid

Representatives of the international airport of Cochin in India, a year ago passed on solar energy, according to the organization, not only completely abandoned state power services and stopped paying for electricity, but she began to deliver the energy to the grid. transition initiative for renewable energy finally began to pay off.

The idea to go to an autonomous supply of energy came to manage the airport three years ago. They began to place solar panels gradually - first on the roof of the passenger terminal, then on the roof of the hangar and adjacent territories.

Inspired by the successful introduction of alternative energy sources, the airport management has ordered the German company Bosch construction of a field of solar panels on vacant land near the airport. The project has managed in $ 9, 3 million. Management believes that the money will be repaid in 6 years due to the fact that there will be no more need to pay electricity bills. And for 25 years of service panels, according to approximate calculations, the atmosphere will not be thrown out 300 thousand tons of carbon dioxide, contributing to the greenhouse effect.

In August 2015 around 50 MW system was commissioned. Due to its proximity to the equator and to the fact that India has about 300 sunny days per year, can handle the load, and covers the daily needs of the seventh busiest airport in India.

Now the project can pay off even faster, because the excess energy of the airport supplies back to the network, for the needs of the population. Even the largest cities in India are constantly faced with power shortages and periodic outages. Airport management has plans to expand solar power in connection with the construction of a new, larger terminal.

Management is even more loaded Airport, Kolkata International Airport, already eyeing the success of colleagues, and also plans to build a solar power plant for its own needs.

Minister of Aviation of India, in January, visited the airport in Cochin, said the government has already required all airports in the country, at least partially use solar energy for their needs.

The cost of energy derived from the sun, in India falls fast enough, and now only 15% more expensive than energy from coal. According to forecasts of Energy, by 2020, this energy will become cheaper already familiar.

Last summer, it was announced that the management of the railways of India as an experiment installs solar panels on the roofs of freight trains.
