Visualisation of music in the XXI century: from Animusic up music box

Swedish musician and inventor created an engineering work of art, jukebox orchestra, like a scene from Pipe Dream Animusic visualization.

Computer visualization saw every musical - flying geometrical figures in music players, or three-dimensional dancing girls Vocaloid. Such visualization react only on the intensity of the sound frequencies and slightly reveal the essence of playing music.

Visualization of Animyuzik (Animusic; in Russian: live music) in the early 2000s acted differently - they have drawn for each of the tunes expressive "mechanical piano", the three-dimensional scene, where schematic instruments playing mechanical fingers and tied motion scene playback MIDI-file containing the melody for these tools.

for reference, the MIDI-format is an alternative to recording music as a sequence of sound waves, which spread to the end of the XIX century with the invention of the phonograph, then phonograph / gramophone, tape recorder and up so far the most commonly used (WAW modern computer formats, MP3, OGG, etc. - it's advanced counterparts records). In contrast, the MIDI - it is, in fact, a computer file with a musical recording tunes for each of the instruments, analogue drum in the music box or a punched tape in a mechanical piano. It is clear that from the stage musical notation extract behavior easier than recording of undifferentiated sound waves. But so difficult to write voice (though the same aforementioned Vocaloid just represent such an attempt).

The most memorable scene from the animation scene was Animyuzik "pipe dream» (Pipe Dream; then play on words: pipe because more and pipe from which the scene is constructed). It was the only scene that was included in the first (2001) and second (2005), a compilation of videos Animyuzik:

Swedish musician and inventor Martin Moulin, the leader of the "Milky Way» (Wintergatan) under the influence of old jukeboxes and obviously under the impression created visualizations Animyuzik jukebox-sharikopodёmnik (marble machine). Built in 14 months (construction process captured on video) Machine Orchestra includes vibraphone, drums, glockenspiel, bass, cymbals, contains about 3 thousand wooden parts and metal balls 2000. The result was a functional kinetic sculpture, an adequate response to virtuality:

Passion for music boxes are not spontaneous - several compositions created by Martin in 2013 of the "Milky Way" are built around a small music box, controlled punched tape. The band combines in his compositions elements of folk and electronic music. I recommend to listen to their concert - personally I liked

. I must say, this is not the first attempt to implement "iron" visualization Animyuzik. In 2011, the 2-robotics engineer for 3 months made a robotic replica of the same scene "pipe dream" for the exhibition of Intel (as advertising Intel Atom processors):

Replica, by the way, quite honestly. instrument sound is played only if the sensor on a plastic petal feels hit by paintball.

However, the creation of Martin Mulina wins robotic orchestra on a number of parameters. Not trying to literally play the scene and used pneumatics, jukebox Mulina contains real musical instruments and honestly collects and recharges balls. And most importantly - it is completely mechanical machine.
