It is impossible to predict earthquakes

Giving a short-term prediction of earthquakes, like the weather forecast, so that people can advance to leave the danger zone, seismologists can not. This was told the head of the Laboratory of continental seismicity and seismic hazard prediction of the Institute of Physics of the Earth Alexey Zavyalov.

"The current state of the science on the nature of the earthquakes have not yet reached a level to give a commercially reasonable forecasts", - said Zavyalov. Long-term and medium-term forecasts, scientists have learned to do, but they can not be tied to the exact date and therefore do not allow to take emergency measures.

"If we are told to give all the data that we have, we will give a forecast once - the authorities to evacuate the population to stop the dangerous production, will block gas pipelines, shut off the light, and the event will not occur; then a second time, the third time; in the end abandon such predictions, "- said the professor.

Roughly speaking, the earthquakes can be ready in theory (to build earthquake-resistant facilities have a plan in case of disaster), but to get an accurate alert for a few days before the event impossible.
