Irritable people are living longer than discreet

If you are angry, for the sake of your health you better let off steam, say scientists. In hot-tempered people, giving way to anger, a better chance to live a long and healthy life than those who hides emotions inside.

Researchers from the University of Jena in Germany believe that this partly explains why the emotional and impulsive Italians and Spaniards live an average of two years longer than the reserved British, who try to keep calm exterior. Self-control and suppression of negative emotions can have serious consequences for the physical and mental health.

Those most at risk are subject to the so-called "repressors", ie people trying to hide the symptoms of fear and anger, and often exhibit defensive behavior. They avoid risks, trying to overly control themselves and their surroundings. When faced with a stressful task, they have increased heart rate, and there are other signs of stress and anxiety.
