As Finns know how to make money 21foto
Imatra rapids - the oldest attractions in Finland. We can say that the history of Imatra tourism began in 1772 when the Russian Empress Catherine II visited and admired the Imatra rapids. The most active tourism in Imatra began in the late XIX century, when wealthy people especially from St. Petersburg began visiting Imatra. From St. Petersburg to the Finnish border was only about forty kilometers and border formalities are not restricted passage, because then Finland was an autonomous part of Russia.
Back in the days of St. Petersburg residents were engaged in shopping trips to Finland. Here, roads and other services have been in a better state than in Russia, and Finland was much closer than the Central and Southern Europe.
The opening of rail link to Imatra in 1892 reduced the travel time from St. Petersburg by half. In 1903, on the banks of the river it built a new hotel, and the number of tourists was the biggest before the First World War. The war closed the border in Russia, but the Finns opened the thresholds again in the 20s, and the number of tourists began to grow again.
Once the thresholds have been blocked by the dam in 1929, the river is raging at them only during organized shows, which are currently held in the summer every day.
To the music of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and the light colored spotlights, open the dam and the water rushes down with a crash.
