White night - the night during which the natural light exposure and do not get too low, ie, all night consists only of twilight. Near the Arctic Circle (on the outside of their party), this phenomenon is observed near the solstices (summer - in the northern hemisphere, the winter - in the south).

Determination of white nights depends on the definition of twilight. If we accept the definition of civil twilight, the midnight sun can be observed at a latitude of at least 60 °, even though they are spoken in a somewhat lower latitudes; however, there is no generally accepted definition. In latitudes above the Arctic Circle white nights are observed within one to three weeks before the onset of the polar day and after. Where there is the polar day, the white nights are observed near the solstice, for the more nights than higher latitude areas, with the highest illumination of the night there on the night of the solstice.

The most famous Russian cities, where there are the white nights are St. Petersburg, Cherepovets, Vologda, Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk, Naryan-Mar, Murmansk. Cities are listed on the darkest nights and short white to the brightest and long white night (in the hero-city of Murmansk White Nights season longer than in Naryan-Mar, and so on. D.).
It is believed that in St. Petersburg white nights going from 11 June to 2 July; a period of very light nights lasts from late May to mid-July.
