Swamp Sёdd

In Southern Sudan, the vast areas occupied by marshes, called Sёdd (Sudd).
They stretch for hundreds of kilometers, and in the rainy season their area exceeds 30,000 square kilometers.
Sun and water contribute to the rapid propagation of plants that do not have roots and float on the surface, forming a carpet.
Over time, the plant gets bigger, thicker at their other plants take root and eventually a dense floating plant mass,
is strong enough to withstand the weight of a large animal. Such cases.

This photograph was taken by National Geographic November 2010: cudanskie fishermen on their floating islands in the middle of the camps, a vast swamp.
