Huge boulders on the beach Koehohe

Between settlements Moeraki and Hampden, on the beach Koehohe are huge stone balls scattered throughout its territory. Some of them are perfectly smooth on the other intricate patterns across. In this photo essay you will be able to see these wonders of nature in all its glory.
Several hundred stones lying on the sandy shores of three hundred meters long, some in the sea, some on land. Until now, there is no unique theory of the origin of these amazing Kamenyuki, some of which reach more than two meters in diameter. It is believed their education began in the Paleocene of the Cenozoic era (65, 5 - 56 million years ago).
In the absence of a scientific theory, we can turn to folklore Maori tribe. They argue that many years ago on the coast of the tragedy: large canoe Arai-te-uru was wrecked and all the rations - pumpkin, potatoes - washed ashore. The ship's captain in despair turned to stone on the beach, followed his example and vegetables scattered on the coast. Not as romantic as Baikal legends brothers and lovers, but also nothing.

Since there was no direct flight, from island to island flew to transfer first on ATR 72, and then an unknown slozhnoidentifitsiruemom plane. In total, the flight took three and a half hours and we were in the city of Dunedin. It is the second largest city in the South Island:

For the first time during the journey, our hotel is located on the ocean. I opened a huge window and fall asleep to the sound of waves. However, the morning has dispelled all the romance of the cold wind, and I woke up with the feeling that slept on the beach bench:

Dunedin is remarkable that here there is the steepest street in the world (at least, so say the local):

The street is really very cool. It was a little scary to climb on our rental car, which is a straight road going 100 km / h with great anguish:

From Dunedin Beach Koehohe where boulders lie admired the views of the South Island:

When we reached the beach, the sky was covered with clouds. Photos with boulders gained some drama:

Around a lot of boulders and stones traditional kinds of forms, however, on closer inspection turned out to be highly compacted sand and clay:

Many boulders are split, you can see the internal structure:

The sandy slope opposite the beach shoes sticking out. Apparently, he was thrown out at the top, but at the time of the landslide, he fell to the shore:

Arina courtesy "straddled" one of the boulders, to show scale Kamenyuki:

Local youth. All the beer probably come here to hang out:

It looks like the eggs of Godzilla:

In the wide angle is not very effectively shows the scale, but believed the stone is very large:
