The Hill of Crosses - a place of gaining happiness

Twelve kilometers from the Lithuanian city of Siauliai has unusual mound, all dotted with crosses of different shapes and different materials. History is silent about the cause and time of occurrence of the Hill of Crosses.

The wide public attention this place was awarded after a visit of the Pope, who established here a cross.






Since then, the Hill of Crosses became a real place of pilgrimage.







And, if initially there were only crosses Catholics (Traditional Lithuanian crosses), now a mixture of many Christian denominations seem commonplace.





According to preliminary estimates, on a hill there are at least fifty thousand crosses.







Naturally their sizes range from small wearable, to huge pagan.







Date of occurrence of the Hill of Crosses is not precisely known.









Scientists have put forward version of the XIV-th to the XIX-th centuries.





It is believed that one who has established a cross, will find happiness.
