Oasis town of Ghadames - the pearl of the desert

This small ancient Libyan town is located on the border of Libya, Tunisia and Algeria. Here, once upon a time a river, and a place for centuries was a strategic, as Ghadames crosses several trade routes.

The first mention of Ghadames dates from the first century BC, when the Romans built a fortress town here called Cydamus.





Today, a small town populated mainly Berbers and located near the palm grove.





The circular layout of the city is different from the usual options for urban development in the region.



The walls of houses on the outskirts are also walls.







Most homes have 2-3 floors. The first is usually busy pantries and utility room.







On the second floor living room of the family, and the third (Terrace) reserved for women, which can freely move there, away from prying eyes.





The old part of the city was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites as far back as 1986.
