Traditions on the Day of Thomas the Unbeliever

Almost in the middle of the month, October 19, Orthodox Christians celebrate the day of remembrance of the Apostle Thomas, the very one who is commonly called “the unbeliever.” People call this holiday Fomin Day. It was today that our ancestors summed up the results of the year: they finished counting the reserves accumulated in the barns, and also tried to guess by signs what winter would be like. And these are not all the interesting features of this day.

Editorial "Site" Today will remind the history of the holiday and tell you how best to spend this day.

Thomas was an ordinary fisherman from Galilee, but one day he heard the preaching of Jesus and was imbued with faith. Leaving all his possessions and family, Thomas followed Christ. Afterwards, the Savior made Thomas one of the twelve apostles, his closest disciples. Thomas is not called an unbeliever because he doubted the faith, but another story is connected with this.

In the Gospel of John it is said that Thomas, who was absent at the first appearance of the risen Christ, did not believe this and demanded proof. Thomas wanted to see for himself and touch the wounds of the nails on Christ’s hands and feet and the wound on his side. When Jesus appeared to the apostles a second time, he offered to put his finger in the wounds. After that, Tom believed.

Through a miracle, the apostle Thomas became the most faithful preacher of the teachings of Christ. With his sermons, he toured many cities and countries and founded Christian temples in Palestine, Ethiopia, India and Mesopotamia. Thomas's sermons They converted many people to Christianity. While in India, Thomas was arrested for converting the wife and son of the ruler to Christianity. Tom was thrown into prison and then tortured for a long time.

The saint died a martyr’s death: after long tortures he was stabbed with spears. Thomas Memorial Day is celebrated by Christians on October 19. For our ancestors, it was a very important holiday, because it was on this day that it was customary to sum up the year and prepare for winter. The hostess distributed how to spend the reserves in winter, salted mushrooms, cucumbers, tomatoes and cabbage. Barns filled with grain, boiled jam and compotes.

Believers on this day from the very morning went to churches, put candles at the icon of the saint. After the church service, people usually set a large table. On this day it was possible not to deny yourself food and to overeat delight, it was not considered a sin. People said, "Tom breaks the bins, take everything for free." On this day, believers can enjoy the harvest and celebrate it. They gave thanks to the Lord.

Few of us are now engaged in farming, so for the urban dweller, these traditions are not particularly relevant, but you can find something for yourself. For example, you can sum up the year, not in terms of harvest, but in the career, financial and family field. Take a look at the past year and see what you’ve accomplished.

  2. If large white clouds float across the sky, there will be no more of them until the end of the year.
  3. If the evening dawn is red, long rains are expected.
  4. If crows gather in flocks, bad weather will soon burst.
  5. If snow has already fallen, summer will be warm and rainy.
  6. In the morning on the grass of dew - the day will be warm and without rain.
