What a stupid mistake almost everyone made in the Total Dictation

This year, the global literacy campaign Total Dictation was held for the 18th time. Not everyone managed to write the dictation without mistakes, and Dmitry Glukhovsky’s text even brought to tears. Some with their complexity and abundance of punctuation marks, others with sad thoughts about the transience of life.

We made a selection of the most common punctuation and spelling errors in this and past dictations. Their analysis will test the literacy of those who could not participate in the action, but still want to test their knowledge.

Dictation without error
  1. A short sentence that made you think
In the third part of Glukhovsky’s text called “The Line” there was one sentence, because of which many missed points.

To say (?) that it was not (?) is to lie.. At first glance, instead of question marks need to put commas. A lot of people did. There are three punctuation marks in this sentence!

First, commas stand out the appendage sentence "that was not." The third sign is a little more complicated. Remember that between the subject and the predicate in the infinitive is put dash. For example: tea drink - not wood hack.

The word “means” does not abolish this rule. This can be read in Dietmar Rosenthal’s Handbook of the Russian Language: in the position between the subject and the predicate, the word “means” serves as a means of communication between the main members of the sentence, a dash is placed before it, and no sign is put after it.

Now it is clear that the third sign in the insidious sentence should be a dash. To say that you were not is to lie.

  2. Tricked or shaved New fences?
The word shrugged can be written with one or two "n". If this is a verbal adjective, then write "screw". If we do this, we write "Spoiled". For example: a scuffed board. In the text, Guzel Yakhina “struganykh” is written with one “n”, since this is a verbal adjective and there are no dependent words.

    phere
  3. Penny or penny joys?
According to the rules, after hissing under stress is written "o", and without stress - "e".

    phere
  4. Is it too big or too big?
The adverb “too much” is written with the letter “c” and merged. He has no related words with which to check the spelling of the letter “c”. Therefore, it is a dictionary word, the spelling of which must be remembered.

As you can see, it is not easy to learn Russian, but it is fascinating and useful. In this age of computers, we still need to be literate. This makes a positive impression on others, allows you to clearly convey your thoughts to them, simplifies communication and is the key to career growth.
