Features of the royal menu

At 94, Elizabeth II looks flawless, leads an active lifestyle and even rides a horse. The royal kitchen is a secret behind seven seals.

But many are haunted by the question: what kind of diet helps Her Majesty stay in perfect shape for so long?

The veil of secrecy over the menu of Elizabeth II and the culinary preferences of other residents of Buckingham Palace lifted Darren McGrady, who for many years was the chef of Princess Diana and the royal family.

As it turned out, the Queen is difficult to call a gourmet. Elizabeth II eats 4 times a day in small portions and prefers simple food, without a lot of seasonings.

“She is very disciplined in that regard. “She can have everything she wants, but it’s that discipline that makes her so healthy and helps her stay fit,” McGrady said.

Hard to believe, but black caviar, truffles and lobster in the monarchy menu is not. “The Queen is not particularly concerned about food. Food, cooks and cuisine are the latest on her list of priorities, the former Windsor chef laments.

The state of Buckingham Palace consists of up to 40 chefs. But all of them are involved only during large banquets, which are held 2-3 times a year.

GettyImages To work at Buckingham Palace, a cook must be prepared for frequent travel. The royal family has many residences where experienced cooks are required from time to time.

Small weaknesses, small weaknesses, everyone can afford. For the queen, it's chocolate, preferably dark. “She never liked milk chocolate or white chocolate,” McGrady said.

Chocolate cake, which we will share in the final part of the article, is the favorite dessert of the Queen. “She will eat a small piece every day until only one tiny piece remains. But she will surely finish it, the cook said.

Princess Diana Lady Di, according to her personal chef, did not eat red meat, preferring fish, poultry and vegetable dishes.

Especially for her, chefs of the royal cuisine prepared low-fat versions of famous dishes.

Kate Middleton The Duchess of Cambridge has long fascinated everyone with her natural charm and toned figure. This is due to sports childhood and an active lifestyle.

Kate Middleton's list of favourite dishes tops a spicy curry. During a visit to Canada in 2016, the Duchess admitted that she often cooks it in her own kitchen and never spares spices.

Why Elizabeth II does not eat garlic Elizabeth II has special tastes that a chef can ignore only on pain of dismissal. For example, the queen is a fierce opponent of garlic. "The Queen never eats garlic or serves it to guests," says royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell.

This is due to the fact that representatives of the ruling dynasty meet with a large number of guests on a daily basis and cannot allow bad breath.

At banquets Her Majesty can drink some gin, and at family dinners - a glass of sweet wine. There is no alcohol on the royal menu.

GettyImages Princes love this: "If Prince Andrew comes to lunch, his favorite dish is crème brulee with Sandringham oranges." Prince William, like the Queen, loves chocolate biscuit cake.

Today, Darren admits that at one time indulged Prince William and Harry, preparing for them not the healthiest food. “I think growing guys need as much pizza as they can fit into them,” he said.

According to the protocol, the chef's proposals are presented to the Queen in a special menu book. There are two options for each dish.

GettyImages The Queen strikes out what she doesn't like, sometimes making her own corrections. Interestingly, even the youngest English cooks were able to participate in the composition of the palace menu.
