Why a bearded man will never be a pilot

117 years ago, on December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made their first twelve-second flight. To commemorate this date, we compiled for readers a selection of interesting facts about pilots and air travel. Do you know, for example, why pilots are forbidden beards and why they wore silk scarves at the dawn of aviation?

Therefore, airlines prefer that the cabin was too cool, instead of at least one passenger fainted. When traveling, do not forget to bring warm clothes. Then you don't have to rely on thorny airline blankets.

Back in the years of the First World War, combat pilots became a special caste. They had their own rules, their own code of honor and their own fashion. I must say that the cockpit of the biplane blown by all the winds of those years is little like the airtight cockpit of a modern fighter.

To keep warm during the cold season, the pilots wore thick leather jackets. And the lack of radar forced him to constantly turn his head in search of the enemy. Thus, the silk scarf on the neck not only added charm to the pilot, but also allowed to protect the neck from rubbing a hard collar leather jacket.

In school, we taught that the shortest distance between two points on a plane is the length of the segment connecting them. Therefore, in the air, where the plane does not need roads, it would be logical to move in a perfect straight line. So why doesn't this usually happen?

The fact is that the maps are just a two-dimensional image of the surface of the Earth, which is known to be a flattened spheroid. Because of this, the shortest route is not a direct one, but an arc.

Additional adjustments to the flight path are made by safety rules that require aircraft to always be within reach of the nearest reserve airfield, and variable weather conditions.

In what cases should a flight attendant be present in the cockpit? When one of the pilots leaves for the bathroom, a flight attendant enters the cockpit of the aircraft. This is done to avoid an emergency situation.

After all, if the door closes behind the pilot, and the co-pilot suddenly loses consciousness, the aircraft will remain without control.

Are pilots allowed to wear a beard? In the past, some airlines banned pilots from wearing beards. It was believed that due to the thick vegetation on the face, an oxygen mask will not fit tightly to him.

GettyImages later conducted comparative tests and realized that the oxygen mask fits perfectly with a beard. Therefore, today there are no restrictions on beard or mustache for pilots. But about the effect of a beard on the effectiveness of a medical mask, experts do not agree.

However, doctors who work in the operating room and intensive care, beards are still undesirable. And to shave or despite everything to grow a beard during quarantine, all other men are free to decide on their own.
