Bell Helicopter unveiled a concept helicopter of the future
A well-known company Bell Helicopter has never before engaged in a variety of futuristic ideas and concepts. However, the exhibition Heli-Expo 2017, held in Dallas, Texas, the company introduced to the public by its specialists, the concept of the helicopter FCX-001. The hallmarks of this unit is the casing made of the most modern multifunctional smart materials, artificial intelligence in the role of the second pilot, the hybrid propulsion system and rotor blades, able to adapt to even the most sudden changes of flight conditions.
"Six months ago we organized a creative team, whose task is to track all the emerging new technologies and develop ways of using these technologies in products of our company," says Mitch Snyder (Mitch Snyder), President of Bell Helicopter, is "One of the main tasks of this group is a visual representation of all technologies and innovations, and the concept FCX-001 is a product of such visualization".
Immediately evident that the helicopter FCX-001 no traditional tail rotor, it replaces the internal system, creating the opposite torque. This solution allows to increase the level of security of the helicopter, to reduce the generated noise and to increase the efficiency of using the energy stored in batteries or obtained by burning fuel. The hybrid propulsion system includes a high-performance heat engines of the new type, which rotate the generators to actuate the main engines and other equipment of the helicopter.
Another distinctive feature of the FCX concept-001 are the rotor blades that can change its shape and configuration, quickly adapting to changes in flight conditions. The body of the helicopter is made of "smart" multifunctional materials. Its the transparent part installed so as to provide pilot and passengers with maximum viewing angle. Moreover, the actual case is one of the main nodes of the power system of the helicopter, it performs the role of the battery and the transducer, even able to absorb energy from the environment during flight.
Inside the cabin of the helicopter FCX-001 there is only one pilot, the maximum equipped with the technologies of virtual and augmented reality. And the role of co-pilot and flight engineer assumes artificial intelligence system, which if necessary can completely take control of the aircraft. But in normal mode the pilot in the role that is close to the role of passive observer. According to Bell Helicopter company this is the first step towards the development of a fully automatic aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing.
The modular design of the passenger cabin allows to set any number of seats that can be removed and make room for additional cargo. In addition, in the passenger compartment are also present systems of virtual and augmented reality, which allow passengers to view entertainment or information transfer, video conferencing or working with documents.
"We hope that the time when we can start the embodiment of such ideas in reality, is not far off," says Mitch Snyder, "And we intend in the future to do all this openly and not behind closed doors, as has happened before." published
