The Vikings landed in Scotland

About 1000 Vikings landed on the 31st of January in the city of Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. It is all held in the annual festival of "Up Helly Aa" traditions which originate in the 19th century. The festival is a descendant of the ancient holiday of Yule, which the Vikings celebrated in honor of the rebirth of the sun. The festival is a public holiday in the Shetland Islands. Volunteers actively worked to create copies of the boat (Drakkar) and more than 1,000 torches are used for lighting at night. The event attracts many visitors and lasts all night.
