2016 officially became the hottest in modern history

The world meteorological organization (WMO) at the UN issued a press release summarizing the observations of the climate of the Earth in 2016. According to experts of the WMO, the average temperature on the planet was 1.1 °C above pre-industrial values and 0.07 °C above the previous record set in 2015.

Scientists believe that a significant contribution to this was made unusually powerful El niño beginning of 2016, which could further increase the temperature by 0.2 °C. However, the main contribution to this growth, according to meteorologists organizations, contributed to human activities. In the message of the WMO notes that all previous record hot years also have in this century, except for 1998, also featured a particularly strong El niño.

"2016 was an extreme year for the global climate and the hottest in history – said the Secretary General of WMO petteri Lalas (Petteri Taalas). But temperature is only part of the picture". The maximum level for all time of modern meteorological observations were made and other indicators. The content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere crossed the psychologically important level of 400 parts per million.

In the middle East, in Kuwait, on 21 July was a record for Asia temperature at 54.0 °C. While next door, in Iraq and Iran, the thermometer rose to 53.9 and of 53.0 °C, and in India up to 51 °C. In January in southern China, in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, marked by an unprecedented cold and snow for the first time in more than half a century. In North Korea in August, the Typhoon caused catastrophic rainfall and flooding. In the summer heat and drought caused large-scale forest fires in Canada. In the early fall hurricane Matthew caused the death of more than 1,000 people. Arctic ice reached a minimum area in the entire history of observations – 10.1 million sq. km.

Full official review of the WMO meteorologists will be released in March. Generally, the scientists promise to present data by region and state of the oceans. However, they note that the unprecedented rise in water temperature has led to widespread coral bleaching and death of their reefs. published
