Design of the festival: budget, fast and effective

The Moscow International Festival “Gardens and People 2016” was held for the third time. This time the venue of the festival is located in the Latvian square on VDNKh. Artzona.ru studio was traditionally invited to become a design partner of the festival and develop entrance groups, festival infrastructure and art objects.
The idea of designing the entrance group was based on the translation of the values of the festival beyond the fence:

  • use in landscaping areas of gardens and parks resistant to aggressive environment species, instead of exotic
  • perennials instead of annuals
  • Growing your own competitive planting material instead of reselling plants from European nurseries.
Therefore, it was decided to integrate plants into the architecture of the entrance in the literal sense of the word. Thus was born a modular design of containers, which were produced in the shop from a pine shield. The installation took place right on the spot, a team of volunteers helped saturate the composition with plants.

A real master of topiary haircut Vladimir Lyapchev helped with pruning plants in containers.

Bright LED backlight added festiveness and graphicity to the object in the evening.

Three-dimensional letters with the name of the festival made it easier for visitors to navigate – it immediately became clear that they came to the main entrance and found what they were looking for.

Also, an ice screen was mounted in the tiered structure - it showed videos from the festival itself, shot in the first days. Thus, visitors could get acquainted with the content of the site at least figuratively before entering the territory. We consider this a very important moment that creates comfort and a friendly environment – the festival does not hide its achievements from the citizens, on the contrary, it wants to share the beauty of plants and talented compositions from the best garden designers of the country.

It was decided to make additional entrances to the territory in the same style and using the same structural elements, only on a smaller scale.

Another designed and realized object at the festival - the Portal through the alley of the 100-year-old Grey Nut - has earned a special love of visitors. The portal immediately became known as a place of power and overgrown with rumors that it fulfills any desires during the transition. In addition to mystical qualities and magical properties, the portal performed a very specific, ecological function - it protected the roots of old trees from all kinds of damage and trampling.

The light of LED spotlights increased the mystical effect in the dark.

The image of the portal as a “transition” to the unknown, to the new, unknown was complemented by an artificial fog mounted on the ends of the flooring – clubs of water sprayed under high pressure through special nozzles added fabulousness and mystery. Also, the fog system, in addition to decorative functions, performed utilitarian - humidifying and cooling the air on a hot and stuffy day.

In general, designers - Ulitin Dmitry and Taratuta Anastasia - tried in a very short time, from the simplest, most accessible and natural materials to create a concise and expressive synthesis of natural and small architectural forms, to demonstrate the strength of the interrelationships of texture, light, color and graphics lines, to suggest the beauty of wildlife and careful attitude to it.
