The Church of the Madonna del Orto
In the heart of Venice, quiet and deserted, which occupies the Northern part of Venice, is the Church of the Madonna del Orto. Alas, in this Church paintings, Bellini's "Madonna and child" is no more — it was stolen in 1993, have been saying for a 3rd time. But the monumental paintings of Tintoretto — "in the Temple, the adoration of the Golden calf, last judgement (according to the legend, seeing this picture, the wife of John Ruskin, author of the famous book "the Stones of Venice" — in horror ran out of the Church).
Tintoretto was born in Venice and lived there all his life, left a beautiful legacy (only one in the Church of San Rocco - 69 compositions. As far as he was frantic in painting, so was quiet and disinterested in life. Often as a reward for the work the artist is asked to pay only the canvas and paint. His credo in painting Tintoretto was expressed in the brief inscriptions that adorned his Studio: "drawing of Michelangelo, Titian's color". To this we could add: "and the high drama of Tintoretto". Chiesa Del Orto became the final resting place of the artist. Near the Church is preserved the house where Tintoretto lived for many years with his large family.
As for the Church, it was originally built in honor of St. Christopher, the patron Saint of gondoliers. But in the 15th century, once in the garden, which was near the Church, were found and recognized as the miracle-working statue of the virgin Mary, the Church was renamed the Del Orto Madonna from the Garden. The Church is open for visits: mon-sat, 10.00-17.00
