The festival called "Human towers of Tarragona is an annual sports event, they are the best team in the country. This competition is held every two years in Tarragona, the Catalan town 90 kilometres South of Barcelona. About 6,000 spectators gather at the old arena Tarragona on the first weekend of October to observe a very unusual competition, where teams of hundreds of people trying to build the biggest human tower. Leading teams compete against each other for the first place in various categories where the winner is the one who fulfilled the most difficult task.









Building human towers is an old Catalan tradition, which for over two hundred years. Each Castell (a Catalan name of the castle) is built by a team under the name of colla, which includes from 75 to 500 men and women. Young and light members form the top of the tower while heavier members form the base. The whole process is accompanied by dramatic music, participants build a tower of 6 to 10 levels high and the prize goes to the most courageous and skilful teams.

This event is popular not only among locals but also many tourists and was declared part of the Intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
