Derawar Fort: the impregnable fortress of Pakistan

Fort Derawar, which has been preserved to our times, is the second Fort on the site. The first Fort was destroyed during the hostilities. As it was a defensive object, he has gone "hand in hand" as a war trophy.

The fortress is private property Pakistani Abbasi family. Inside the fortress is their family cemetery, and a marble mosque, which is a sample of Mughal architecture.

Interesting is the fact that Abbasi became owners Delaware only in 1804, although the Fort was erected by order of their ancestor, Raja of Jaisalmer. Immediately after the construction of the fortress Jaisalmeri lost control of the citadel.

Fort staggers the imagination. Huge! The perimeter is a mile and a height of walls up to 30 meters. Number of towers — 40. Corner towers just above the other. Cholistan are several FORTS, but Derawar, the largest and best preserved. The fortress built on the ruins of even more ancient ruins from the pre-Islamic period. Masonry cladding of the towers from dried bricks. Near Derawar Fort Derawar is the same or Shahi mosque of white marble. It was built by Amir Khan in the first half of the nineteenth century, in 1835, to be exact. The mosque is exquisite. Has a rectangular base and three fluted domes. At each corner of the minaret.

Until recently, the entrance to the fortress of Derawar was closed to the average tourist. On its territory is allowed only representatives of the elite: high-ranking officials, the upper class of Pakistan and the soldiers who were guarding the port.

Now Derawar open to travelers. But to visit it, you must obtain special permission from the Amir of Bahawalpur. Therefore, it is better to plan in advance a trip and obtaining necessary documents.
