The feeling of shame intensifies alcohol dependence
Some of the psychological techniques used to guide human to the right path, in different situations — put him to shame. However, this method, in some cases, can only hurt. As in the case of drunkenness.
According to scientists from the University of British Columbia (Canada), the feeling of shame is not something that causes the patient to stop drinking, and Vice versa — provokes him to take a bottle. This applies particularly to those who recently quit.
The researchers studied hundreds of situations with alcoholics who quit. The scientists also met people that surround patients in their daily life, and analyzing the environment in which we live recovering. Psychological tests took into account the fact that people tend to lie, so they relied on the verbal signals and the testimony of relatives. One of the main issues was returned in the family or among friends about alcoholism, particaly if a drunk it in the past. For the survey followed by long observation of the lives of patients.
As it turned out, people feel shame for past deeds, or those who reproached close, much more back to the old habit. But in this study there is a clear distinction between shame and guilt. If a person is not to blame for his actions, but just right to show that his family and friends suffered because of drunkenness, it is possible thereby to help him. The fact that the guilt is helping ex-alcoholic to hold back.
