Made a new record drilling depth of the seabed!

Scientific deep-sea drilling ship "Chikyu" has set a new world record, taking rock samples from a depth of more than 2 110 m under the bottom of the Pacific ocean around the Japanese Peninsula Shimokita.

Drilling was carried out in the framework of a biosphere expedition to study deep coal seams (Deep Coalbed Biosphere), which is part of a comprehensive oceans drilling program (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program). The previous record set consisted of 2 101 m. It was installed when working on the hole 504B, reef Costa Rica.

One of the leading scientists of the expedition 337 Fumio Inagaki said that this is only the beginning. "Chikyu" has not yet shown its full potential.

The representative of the European side, Kai-Uwe Hinrichs of the University of Bremen (Germany) noticed that the quality of the samples really high, that shows a huge GL accuracy of drilling.

"Chikyu" can drill to a depth of 10 thousand meters below sea level. It was created in order to reach the seismogenic zones at the boundaries of lithospheric plates and the deepest layers of the biosphere. Samples of coal, which was mined in the course of the expedition, will report on the deep life forms, which are associated with hydrocarbon systems of marine mineral resources and, maybe, will involve them in the creation of natural gas, and the joint evolution of planet and life on it.

Continue: scientists need to sample deeper rocks and reservoir fluids.
