Bloom: Phytoplankton floating farm

The list of finalists of the international competition Architizer A+ Awards has been announced. One, the ambitious Bloom project, is a semi-submerged phytoplankton farm that will play a key role in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as well as controlling sea levels.
The floating spherical structure is conceived as a weapon in the fight against global warming, rising sea levels and as a tsunami warning. Huge plantations of phytoplankton (microscopic marine organisms) will be used to regulate oxygen levels in areas most affected by global warming.

Microorganisms located in the structure will absorb carbon dioxide and “process” it into oxygen, through photosynthesis. In addition, Bloom Castle is able to filter salt water and even process it into fresh water. Thus, the farm will be able to regulate the salinity of the world's oceans.

Despite its futuristic nature, the Bloom project, with sufficient funding, could soon be implemented. This is stated in the report of the developers. The miniature trial farm has already been tested in the laboratory.
