Robotic arm turns a drummer into a cyborg
Two years ago, James Barnes lost part of his right arm while cleaning the ventilation. He was a drummer and that injury meant a lot to him. But he decided not to give up and made himself a prosthetic for playing on a drum set. Of course, he was far from perfect, but thanks to his tenacity, Barnes gained support at the Music Institute in Atlanta. After that, his life began to change for the better. He decided to become Superman.
At the institute, Barnes met percussion instructor Eric Sanders, who, in turn, helped Barnes find a man who could remake his prosthesis. That person was Jill Weinsberg of the Georgia Institute of Technology. His field of activity was the creation of drummer robots, but Barnes became his first cyborg.
Last week, a man and a machine teamed up for the first time. The robot hand has two drumsticks, so at some points Barnes can play with one hand instead of two. So far, the drummer is just getting used to his new arm, but during the first improvisational rehearsals with his band, he was quite pleased.
