Diamonds in the oil – new grease from the scientists

As it turned out, a mixture of diamond nanoparticles and mineral oil is far superior to other types of fluids used in heat exchange processes.

University staff rice mixed with diamond particles of approximately 6 nm in diameter with mineral oil. Scientists wanted to test the conductivity of liquids, effect of temperature on its viscosity. During the experiment it turned out that this mixture is much better than the other nanofluids, with a high content of metals, ceramics, carbon nanotubes and other composite materials. Such results are very important for applications where control of heat is paramount.

Coolants are used to reduce wear and tear of parts, tools and components in forging, drilling, drug therapy.

Wide application of such materials found in fuel cells, air conditioners, solar batteries and diagnostics. Liquids, such as water or ethylene glycol have good fluidity, but the bad heat dissipation. More complex heat transfer materials have other drawbacks: stability, viscosity, surface charge.

It turned out that nanodiamonds are the best additive for this type of fluids. Single crystals of the precious mineral have 100 times better thermal conductivity than copper. At the same time, acting as an effective lubricant. As explained by one of the developers of the great properties of nanodiamond – lubricating, high thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity and stability, very impressive.
