Ecotourism-the wonderful world of Socotra island

Socotra is a small archipelago consisting of four Islands in the Indian ocean , near the Gulf of Aden. Located about 250 miles off the coast of Yemen , the largest island of the archipelago, the most called Socotra, is home to some of the strangest plants and trees of the planet.





On the island you can find 825 rare species of plants , more than a third of which are native and unique . Something similar happens in relation to animal species. 90% of reptiles and 95% of the snakes on the island of Socotra live exclusively within this territory.





the marine environment is very rich: 235 species of corals, 730 species of fish that live along the coast, 300 species of crabs, shrimps and lobsters. Early isolation from the mainland of the island of Socotra, allowed species of plants and animals to survive, not being able to spread to other places in the course of evolution.





The most unusual among plants on the island of Socotra is dracaena cinnabari , strange in the shape of an umbrella tree, whose red SAP was thought blood dragon ancient peoples who used it for medicinal purposes and as a tincture.

But that's not the only strange tree on the island. Here we can also find the so-called “cucumber tree" (Dendrosicyos socotranum) or tree - bottle "( Adenium Obesum socotranum ).





Numerous aloe plants of local origin are also used for medicinal purposes. Among the rare species of aloe of Socotra island there is a plant called Aloe perryi .

plants typical of the island giant Dorstenia , Boswellia socotrana and protopunica, is a rare pomegranate tree belonging to the family Lythraceae.
