The students explained the technology of creation of protective shields from Star wars
Students from the University of Leicester, UK, has compiled a report on the physics of plasma screens used to protect battling spaceships in a series of science fiction films Star wars. The article is published in a peer-reviewed student Journal of Special Physics Topics.
The report, future researchers came to the conclusion that deflecting lasers shields, like the ones we were shown in Star wars, can be made according to existing technology right here on Earth. However, according to experts, these boards are very energy-consuming and not very practical.
The shields in the Star wars films invisible to the naked eye, and are either completely transparent or tinted. Shields effectively rejected laser beams, keeping the shielded object in the security.
To repeat this kind of shield, according to the authors of the report, you need to create a field of super hot plasma that will hold a magnetic field in a predetermined position. According to the researchers, the denser the shield plasma, the greater the frequency of the electromagnetic wave or laser, he will be able to reflect.
This phenomenon can actually be observed in the upper layers of our own planet. Similar principle for long-distance radio channels, where it is not possible to use satellite technology.
“The atmosphere of the Earth consists of several individual layers, one of which is the ionosphere. The ionosphere is a plasma above the Earth's surface on the border with outer space. Just like the plasma described in our paper, it reflects certain frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, in this case radio frequencies,” says study author Alexander Tuhy, student at the University of Leicester.
However, while the ability to generate a magnetic field required for a shield is feasible, a large power source needed to maintain the field to create space ships is not yet possible. Another important issue to the system developed by students in the UK is that the shield, intended to protect against laser radiation, and also does not transmit visible light that completely blinds the pilot of a spaceship. Earlier, scientists have theorized, how could it form the planet Tatooine from Star wars.
