Electric car Chevy Spark will receive a new battery

The Chevy Spark EV, a silver medalist for the most efficient electric vehicles, will be equipped with a less capacious battery in 2015. Why is that? All manufacturers are striving for more capacious batteries to maximize the range of an electric vehicle, one of the most important factors hindering the development of the electric vehicle market.

In 2015, the A123 Systems 20 kWh battery pack will be replaced by LG Chem’s own battery pack. The new battery of reduced capacity will provide storage of only 19 kWh, but according to the company's engineers, the mileage of the electric car will not change, since the battery pack will be 40 kg lighter and have higher efficiency. The range on one battery charge will remain unchanged 100-110 km.

LG Chem batteries are also used by GM in the Volt and Cadillac ELR hybrid. Such universalization will reduce the final cost of the car.

The new GM Chevy Spark EV will hit U.S. shelves in 2015 at a reduced price of less than $20,000 thanks to government initiatives and technology optimization. Today, the price of an electric car is $ 25,000 without a battery, which is leased separately, to increase the attractiveness of an electric car for an ordinary motorist.
