Photo report by the Bajau Laut Sea Gypsies

Settlements of the Bajau Laut tribes, or simply “sea gypsies”, are completely divorced from the benefits of civilization: there is no electricity or running water, but only the Indian Ocean, which stretches for thousands of kilometers around. They live in houses standing right on the water, and step ashore only occasionally to sell their catch and stock up on provisions.

In recent years, the government has adopted a number of state programs that force the “sea gypsies” to move to land. While the floating villages of the nomads did not turn into an urban myth, anthropologist James Morgan visited their huts and captured the ordinary everyday life of marine residents.
