Solarium increases the risk of melanoma

The results of a study at the University of Minnesota show that tanning in a solarium increases the risk of developing melanoma, even in a gentle mode.

To test the hypothesis that this type of indoor tan prevents sunburn and subsequent skin cancer, researchers from the Cancer Center analyzed data from 1,167 patients, excluding those who suffered burns during this procedure and compared them with indicators of the control group.

In analyses adjusted for socio-demographic factors (age, gender, income, education), eye color, hair and skin, number of freckles and moles, family history of melanoma and sun exposure during life, and sunscreen use, the researchers found that patients who attended the tanning bed were almost four times more likely to get melanoma than the control group. Experts concluded that tanning indoors, even without burns, is a risk factor for melanoma.
