The piercing story of one photo

A Japanese orphan stands at attention, bringing the body of his younger brother to be cremated. Nagasaki, Joe O'Donnell, 1945.

This photo was taken by American photojournalist Joe O’Donnell in Nagasaki in 1945.

He recently told the story of this photo:

“I saw a boy walking for about ten years.

He was carrying a baby on his back.

In those days in Japan, we often saw children playing with their younger siblings by putting them on their backs, but this boy was clearly different.

I thought he was here for some serious reason.

He had no shoes. His face was tough.

The child’s head dangled from side to side as if he were asleep.

The boy just stood for five or ten minutes.

The men in white masks approached him, and silently began to remove the rope (which was holding the child).

At that moment, I saw that the baby was dead.

The man carried the child in his arms and put it in the fire.

The boy stood still and looked at the fire.

He bit his lower lip so hard it turned red with blood.

Then the boy turned around and left quietly.
