Excess sleep for the elderly is as dangerous as sleep deprivation

As a result of a large study of older people, scientists concluded that too much sleep causes the same negative effects on the brain as lack of sleep.

Experts from the University of Warwick examined nearly 9,000 people aged 50-64. Those who slept less than six or more than eight hours a night had memory problems and poorer decision-making abilities. Co-author Professor Francesco Cappuccio said: Only the right amount of sleep among older adults can prevent age-related decline in mental abilities that can lead to dementia. Dr. Cappuccio: Sleep is important for good health and mental well-being. Optimizing sleep in old age may delay the decline in brain function that occurs with age, slow or prevent the rapid decline that leads to dementia.
