Emperor penguins - endangered species list

Emperor penguins are not currently categorized as being "at risk". They are not in the IUCN red list, but they should be there, according to biologists who study this species. Scientists expect that at least 2/3 of the colonies of Emperor penguin will lose at least 50% of their population by the end of the century due to changes associated with sea ice caused by global warming.

Sea ice is of great importance for the penguins. Not so bad, if the Antarctic will melt, but sea ice cover should be mandatory, just because it too much makes for a long "excursions" of the penguins, when they go to find food for their offspring (their colonies already 50-120 km/31-75 miles from the open sea).

"If sea ice will be less than the standards that were laid down as the climate models of the IPCC and continues to influence Emperor penguins, just as he did in the second half of the 20th century in Terre adélie, two-thirds of the colonies, according to forecasts, will decrease by more than 50 percent from their current size by 2100," said Stephanie Jenouvrier (Stephanie Jenouvrier), a biologist from the Oceanographic Institute Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). "None of the colonies, even in the most southern place in the Ross sea, will provide a viable refuge by the end of the 21st century. We believe that the Emperor penguin is fully deserving to be included in lists of threatened species in connection with climate change and can also act as an iconic example of a new global conservation paradigm for species threatened by climate change in the future."

At the moment, the Emperor penguin klassificeret as "about threats" in the IUCN red list and is still considering for inclusion on the U.S. list of endangered species in accordance with the American Law on the conservation of endangered species of animals and birds.published
