Curiosity will celebrate its second year on Mars

Dug into the regolith two-meter iron stone

For the first time on the six hundred and fortieth day of its journey across the planet Mars, Curiosity discovered a meteorite. Moving to Aeolis Mons – a mountain known to many as “Mount Sharp”, the rover literally stumbled upon an unusual find, which was immediately shared with earthlings.

On Earth, by the way, you can also sometimes find such meteorites, although less often than stone ones. On Mars, on the contrary, they make up the majority, which is partly due to their high resistance to the erosion processes occurring on Mars.

To photograph, consisting of two parts of the meteorite, it was possible thanks to the laser analyzer, or rather, the tool that is in its composition - Remote Micro-Imager. A large part of the meteorite was named Lebanon, the smaller was called Lebanon B. Color correction was made using the Mastcam instrument.

The rover found another meteorite two meters long, and all three findings are the first to be discovered by a rover that arrived on the planet two years ago, in August. Soon, the rover will celebrate its second year on Mars, which, as it turned out, had the conditions for the existence of life. Proving this was the main objective of the mission.
