European satellite recorded a decrease in the area of the poles by half

According to the European research satellite CryoSat-2, the volume of ice in the Arctic is decreasing by 160 billion tons annually. Scientists note that now even Antarctica has already begun to lose its ice sheets – so far gone global warming, reports The Guardian.

If all the Antarctic ice melts, the sea level will rise by 4 meters, which will lead to the destruction of coastal areas throughout the planet. Scientists compared data collected by the satellite in 2010-2013 with information from 2005-2010 and recorded the melting of Antarctic ice, which is twice as fast as before. About 159 billion tons of ice melt in Antarctica every year.

The head of the CryoSat-2 project, Dr Andrew Sheffield, from the University of Leeds, says the situation with melting ice has been worrying experts for a long time. He has developed the most detailed map of the Arctic and Antarctic ice, and now all he has to do is find a solution to stop it.
