Electricity production through train traffic

Ten students from the University of Delhi, together with 2 teachers, received permission to start a pilot project to produce electricity through strong air currents created by trains in the subway. After conducting a study, the students found that the greatest efficiency of wind generators show at the points of transition of trains from underground to above-ground lines of railways and at the exits of tunnels. The most effective places for installing wind turbines of small size were found thanks to the information about train speeds kindly transmitted by the management of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Ideally, these batteries could generate approximately 12 kW or 200 watts per day for each hour. Taking into account all losses, this method can produce approximately 4.6 kW per day.

Despite the fact that the generated energy is much less than what the subway wastes, the company decided to support this initiative of students, approving the installation of one of these wind turbines. In the end, such an installation for the subway will be almost free, and can bring its benefits. It should be noted that the company pays for electricity at one of the highest tariffs in the city.

The Delhi metro carries approximately two million passengers every day, and there are one hundred and forty-two stations on 196 kilometers of railway tracks. Once the company has completed all of its planned construction work, the Delhi Metro will be among the four largest subways in the world.
