Mass suicide of sperm whales in Italy

The incident occurred on the Italian coast near the village of Punta Aderchi. A whole flock of sperm whales washed up on the beach. Three of them are female. The length of the animals ranges from 7.3 to 8.9 meters.

The locals immediately rushed to their rescue. Unfortunately, only four of the seven were able to help. They were sent to the north of the country so that specialists could properly examine them and carry out the necessary treatment.

The area where sperm whales were dumped is now under Coast Guard surveillance. In the near future, scientists of the local university will begin an autopsy procedure to find out the cause of the mass suicide.

This is not the first time sperm whales have been stranded. A similar story happened in Australia in November 2011. Then 16 animals were thrown off the island of Tasmania. Scientists have suggested that sperm whales went on suicide, because they could not bear the noise of the engines of ships.

In September 2012, 22 short-fin whales were stranded in Florida. Experts explained this by parasites that affect the brain of animals, forcing them to stray off course.
