The role of caffeine in reducing the severity of pain
Caffeine is often used in combination with painkillers such as paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin for potentiating the analgesic effect of the latter. But how justified is this?
Researchers conducted a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of analgesics as monotherapy and in combination with caffeine in acute pain. Drugs were administered once at the same dosage. In the meta-analysis included 19 studies, which involved 7238 patients. Mainly studied the effect of paracetamol or ibuprofen in combination with 100-130 mg of caffeine on postoperative dental pain, postpartum pain or headache. The effectiveness of analgesics in combination with caffeine was slightly higher than the efficiency of analgesics as monotherapy, this result was statistically significant and did not depend on the type of pain. If you use caffeine, the number of patients who have achieved a good analgesic effect (reduction of pain severity by 50% increased by 5-10% compared with that in monotherapy painkillers.
