Cashier's checks are dangerous to health
Scientists at the University of Missouri on the basis of their research, warning that paper receipts can cause diabetes, obesity and cancer.
The researchers say that bisphenol a, or BPA, can affect hormones, raising, thus, the risk of health problems. Although the chemical is banned for manufacture of baby bottles, it continues to be used in food packaging, despite calls by experts.
According to experts, the bisphenol A can enter the blood stream through the skin. While BPA is absorbed much faster when it connects with other substances: sunscreen, soap, or disinfectant for hands. Last year the European Committee for food safety said BPA does not pose a significant health risk to anyone except very young children. However, scientists believe the harm from these chemicals is much more serious than previously thought.
Professor Frederick vom Saal: "Receipts from shops, ATMs, tickets and other thermal papers all use a huge amount of BPA for printing on the surface of the print paper. The problem is, as consumers often have disinfectants, Soaps and sunscreens on our hands that drastically alter the rate of absorption of BPA".
According to vom Saal, experiments have shown that BPA is absorbed very quickly. "Our research showed that large amounts of BPA can get on your hands and then to food you have to eat, and it can penetrate through the skin."
The researcher added: "BPA exhibits hormone-like properties and it has been proven that it causes reproductive defects in the fetus, newborns, children and adults, as well as cancer, metabolic and immune problems in rodents. BPA from thermal paper is absorbed quickly into the blood, causing can occur many diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Use of BPA or other similar chemicals used to replace BPA in thermal paper poses a threat to human health".
