How to make business waste? Example: center of repair of old furniture in London

We recycle only 10% worn-out furniture. This is despite the fact that its restoration and reconstruction is a very profitable business. Verify this on the example of two English organizations, which opened 5 centers for the repair and restoration of furniture in London.

In the EU, wastes from furniture constitute about 4% of the total amount of municipal solid waste. Only 10% of them are recycled, while the rest of into landfills and incinerators. These data are presented in the report of the European Federation of Furniture Manufacturers. Two British organizations have evaluated the potential for disposal of old furniture and decided to create a social business in this area. Having received funding under the program LIFE+ they opened 5 centers recycling furniture in London.

The organization called Groundwork London and the London Community Resource Network, and their centers of furniture known as The Loop. They were established in unused areas, which government or private owners put at the disposal of the project.

Since the end of October, a team of volunteers start The Loop free collection of unwanted goods and furniture from local residents. People can donate these things to the center, removing from the care of her transportation to authorized recycling facilities and avoid the possibility of a fine for its release in the wrong place.

After collecting such items as furniture, sofas and other items of hearth and home will be repaired and redistributed. The task is to turn them into useful items delivered to teams consisting of a coordinator and assistant, one for each center.

In addition, the initiators of the project proposed to encourage local residents to recycle and reuse resources, helping them to obtain or develop the necessary skills in order to be able to restore items that they considered to be waste. In addition to free training, the initiators of the project set itself the task to provide in the future and the possibility of voluntary work or even employment. published
