Home solar store hydrogen
Although solar panels can be used to provide homes with a clean energy, demand for electricity fluctuates throughout the day, and often is excess capacity. New development of Chiang Mai University, reportedly solves these problems. The technology converts the excess power into hydrogen and stores it for future use.
According to the project developers, company CNX Construction, four houses and several other specially constructed buildings, will be the first in the world powered by solar panels and stored hydrogen.
To achieve this, it will eventually be installed a 114 kW photovoltaic panels, generating approximately 441 kWh of electricity per day, a partial surplus which will be stored in two lead-acid batteries with a capacity of 2000 Ah each.
The cells will then convert additional excess power to hydrogen, decomposing water with electricity. The hydrogen will be stored until then, until needed, usually at night, and at this point it will be converted back into electricity using fuel cells.
The company CNX claims that the system is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way to keep produce energy. In addition, the process is completely clean, its only byproducts are oxygen and water.
At full operation, the system may be able to produce hydrogen with a maximum capacity of 2000 l (440 gallons) every hour and can store up to 90,000 litres (19,800 Gal).
Daily electricity demand will be around 200 kW fuel cells can produce 120 kWh in the fully filled hydrogen tanks, easily covering the need of 80 kWh that will be needed during the night.
For efficiency, the homes will be equipped with solar hot water system, this means that to heat the water electricity will not be required. In addition, the house will have double glazing, thick walls, natural ventilation, efficient fans to reduce the use of air conditioning, and large Windows and led lamps are low energy consumption to minimize the energy required for lighting.
The technology is being tested with the given load since March. CNX reported that the building will be fully operational by the end of January. published
